Canada is one of the largest markets on BarberCourses.com with 25 courses across cities from Vancouver and Calgary through to Toronto, Montreal, Halifax and Winnipeg.Regulation is provincialAs in the United States, there is no single national credential. Hairstyling and barbering are regulated province by province. Several provinces, notably Ontario and Alberta, run barbering and hairstyling as a formal apprenticeship: you are employed in a shop, log thousands of hours on the job, attend block release training, and finish with a recognised certificate of qualification. Other provinces work through private colleges and public institutes offering diploma programmes measured in months. If you intend to work in more than one province, check how your credential transfers before enrolling.Where to studyToronto leads, followed by Vancouver, Calgary and Mississauga, then Edmonton, Mississauga and Ottawa. In Vancouver, Blanche Macdonald runs a professional barbering programme within one of Canada’s best-known beauty schools. Imperial Barber Shop Training Center and Studio 500 Hairstylist Apprenticeship Program sit at the more trade-focused end of the market.Quebec is worth calling out separately: training there runs largely in French through the provincial vocational system, and Montreal’s listings reflect a scene with its own distinct character and clientele. The Canadian sceneCanadian barbering has grown quickly in the last decade, helped by strong immigration from countries with deep barbering traditions: Middle Eastern, South Asian, Caribbean and Latin American barbers have all shaped what Canadian shops now offer. The practical result is that Canadian barbers are often expected to handle a genuinely wide range of hair types and textures, and the better schools train for that explicitly. It is a fair question to ask any programme: whose hair will I actually be cutting during training?
