Portugal

Portugal’s barbering scene has grown quickly, and its training is better credentialled than most of southern Europe. BarberCourses.com lists 4 providers here, three in Lisbon and one in Vila Nova de Gaia. How training worksPortuguese vocational training runs largely through certified professional courses, with qualifications recognised through the national system and, for many practitioners, through IEFP-linked provision. In practice most working Portuguese barbers train through private academies offering focused cursos de barbeiro over weeks rather than years: 26 Academy (Academia de Barbeiros), CEN, Academy Beauty School and Artisans Academy all operate in this format. The Portuguese sceneLisbon and Porto have both seen a sharp rise in dedicated barbershops over the past decade, part of a broader wave that has reshaped Portuguese city centres. Brazilian influence is significant and worth understanding: a large Brazilian community works in Portuguese hair and barbering, bringing techniques and a service culture that has visibly shaped what Portuguese shops offer. Portuguese-language barbering education also flows in both directions between the two countries.Traditional Portuguese barbering has not disappeared either. Older neighbourhood barbearias survive, particularly outside the main cities, and with them the straight-razor shave as an ordinary service rather than a premium add-on.Practical notesCosts are low by Western European standards and the market is growing, which makes Portugal an attractive place to start. The constraint is choice. Six listed courses is thin, and provision outside Lisbon is limited. Courses are taught in Portuguese.
