Carlow Institute of Further Education & Training

Carlow Institute of Further Education and Training, part of Kilkenny and Carlow ETB, runs a one-year full-time Barbering course in Carlow town. It leads to a City & Guilds Diploma at UK Level 3, which the institute equates to an Irish Level 5 major award. Subjects covered include health and safety in the salon, client consultation, cutting men’s hair, cutting facial hair and shaving services, hot towel shaving, and salon products.

Entry is open to applicants over 17 who have completed fifth or sixth year and hold a Leaving Certificate or QQI Level 4 qualification; Garda vetting is required, as learners may work with vulnerable people. Means-tested SUSI maintenance grants may apply. The course suits school leavers and adults starting out, and the institute lists progression into salon employment, self-employment, fashion and media barbering, and work on cruise ships and at resorts.
