Douglas J Aveda Institute

Douglas J Aveda Institute operates a barbering school at its East Lansing campus on Albert Avenue, alongside the cosmetology and esthiology programs taught at that location. Barbering is also offered at the company’s Knoxville, Tennessee and Lincoln, Nebraska campuses, but not at Ann Arbor, Grand Rapids or Royal Oak. In Michigan the barber program runs 1,800 clock hours, and graduates apply for licensure after passing written and practical state examinations.

The curriculum opens with about thirteen weeks of classroom instruction in barbering science and history, bacteriology and histology, followed by supervised clinic work on paying guests. Topics include haircutting, straight razor shaving, coloring, permanent waving and other chemical services, skin care, sanitation, state regulations, and business subjects such as marketing and resume preparation. The institute is accredited by the National Accrediting Commission of Career Arts and Sciences. The East Lansing clinic operates Tuesday through Saturday.
