Solihull College & University Centre

Solihull College and University Centre runs a VTCT Level 2 Diploma in Barbering as a full-time course, listed at both its Woodlands and Blossomfield campuses. It is made up of eight units covering health and safety, client consultation, shampooing and conditioning, cutting men’s hair and facial hair, styling, colouring, creating a themed image and promoting salon products. Theory and practical work are assessed continuously, with students building a portfolio of assignments, projects, practical work and online exams. Entry is normally three GCSEs at grade 3 or above including English, plus an interview and satisfactory reference, and the usual next step is Level 3 barbering.

Barbering is also delivered as an apprenticeship, the Level 2 Hairdressing Professional (Barbering) standard leading to the Level 2 Diploma for Hair Professionals. Apprentices attend Blossomfield one day a week on day release, must be employed for at least 30 hours weekly, and finish with an end-point assessment by practical observation and professional discussion.
