Studio 500 Hairstylist Apprenticeship Program
Studio 500 is operated by the Toronto District School Board’s Community Services unit rather than by a private career college, and is an approved training delivery agent of Ontario’s Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development. It delivers the in-school portion of the hairstylist apprenticeship at Burnhamthorpe Collegiate Institute on The East Mall in Etobicoke. Level 1 and Level 2 each run either full time over eight weeks, five days a week, or part time over sixteen weeks, two days a week, preparing registered apprentices for the Certificate of Qualification examination for hairstylists in Ontario.
Enrolment is limited to people already employed in the trade and registered as apprentices, aged at least 16 and holding an Ontario Secondary School Diploma. The board identifies the trade as Hairstylist and Barber, code 332A; barbering is not offered as a separate programme. Coursework covers cutting, colouring, chemical services, health and safety, and salon operations.
