The Academy

The Academy is a specialist hair and beauty training provider in North Yorkshire, offering barbering alongside hairdressing, beauty therapy and a Level 1 diploma. Two barbering routes are listed: a Level 2 VRQ in Barbering and a Level 2 Diploma for Barbering Professionals delivered as an apprenticeship. Both mix practical and theoretical work, covering health and safety, client consultation, shampooing and scalp massage, cutting hair and facial hair, styling men’s hair, product promotion and reception duties. The apprenticeship route also covers colouring, lightening and creating a themed image.

Assessment is by practical work on clients, online tests and assignments. Entry asks for a keen interest in barbering; GCSE maths and English at grade 4 are preferred, with Functional Skills taken otherwise. Study is one to two days a week, and adult funding is available to York and North Yorkshire residents aged 19 or over. Progression routes listed include Level 3 study, apprenticeships and assessing.
