THASA – The Hair Academy of South Africa, Potchefstroom
THASA, the Hair Academy of South Africa, has operated in Potchefstroom in North West province since 2008 and runs a dedicated barbering short course alongside its main hairdressing qualification. The barbering course is ten days, Monday to Friday from 9am to 2pm, and is open to beginners as well as to working hairdressers upgrading their skills. The published cost is R15,500 in total, made up of a R5,000 non-refundable registration fee and a R10,500 balance payable before training begins, with a tool kit extra at between R6,500 and R8,500.
Content covers clipper and scissor technique, fading methods, head massage and hot towel shaving, hair analysis spanning growth patterns, textures, scalp conditions and face shapes, product knowledge and tool maintenance, and health and safety. Assessment combines a multiple-choice knowledge test with a practical evaluation. Be clear on what the award is: the barbering course leads to a THASA Skills Certificate of Achievement, an in-house certificate with no NQF level attached, not an accredited national qualification. THASA separately delivers the National Certificate in Hairdressing under the QCTO across NQF Levels 2 to 4 over two years, and is an international City and Guilds examination centre. The published barbering intake dates and fees have not been refreshed since 2024, so confirm both directly before committing.
