Universidad de San José – Técnico Universitario en Barbería Profesional
This is the strongest credential in Central American barbering and one of the most unusual in this directory: a one-year university-level technical qualification in barbering, awarded by a private university recognised by Costa Rica’s national council for private higher education since 1992.
The Técnico Universitario en Barbería Profesional trains students in the full range of a barber’s work, beard care, hair cutting, conditioning, and product recommendation and sales. Entry requires the ninth-year secondary completion certificate along with identification and photographs, and credit recognition is available for relevant study completed elsewhere, so prior training need not be repeated. A downloadable study plan is published, which is more than most providers offer.
The university operates from San José with regional campuses at San Ramón, San Carlos, Liberia, Guápiles, Nicoya and Puntarenas, though the barbering programme page does not specify which deliver it. Neither the weekly hours nor the fees are published, both worth establishing before applying, since a university technical qualification will normally cost more than a private academy course, and the trade-off is that it is a recognised award rather than an in-house certificate.
