York College
York College’s Level 2 City and Guilds Certificate in Barbering is a full-time course running for 35 weeks and aimed at adult learners aged 19 and over. It covers health and safety in the salon, client consultation and communication, hair and scalp treatments, cutting men’s hair using a range of barbering techniques, shaping facial hair, and drying and finishing. Teaching combines practical salon sessions with classroom work and independent study, using the college’s two fully equipped hairdressing salons and real client work where possible.
Assessment is internal, through practical observation, written assignments, online tests, oral questioning and a portfolio, with external verification by City and Guilds. Adult applicants have an interview with the course tutor before starting. A Level 2 Barbering Professional apprenticeship is also offered, typically taking 18 months plus end-point assessment and leading to the Level 2 Diploma for Hair Professionals.
